# Can the statd be disabled/enabled?

Whats statd used in temporal for, what will be the consequence of disabling it?

[StatsD](https://github.com/statsd/statsd) is one of the possible metrics reporting backends that Temporal supports. In production, we recommend using [Prometheus](https://prometheus.io/) or [M3](https://www.m3db.io/) which are more advanced.

I believe StatsD is already not included into Temporal [docker-compose](https://github.com/temporalio/temporal/blob/f73889c37f8771d3ebc75bfad6abd0735d1cbd3f/docker/docker-compose.yml) files and [Helm charts](https://github.com/temporalio/helm-charts).

Thanks, so will make prometheus the default metrics handler or will it require custom coding to extract metrics?
